Complications of Ankylosing Spondylitis

Ankylosing spondylitis can cause serious health problems as well as crippling problem. Day to day activities may be hampered due to pain the disease cause. Spine may become rigid and bending may be very painful and difficult. In severe cases bending may not be possible. Sonner or later complications develop in Ankylosing spondylitis. It is not possible to stop complications or progression of the disease, although by optimal management (use of physical therapy, medications and other methods) it is possible to delay progression of disease and complications.ID-100164043

The complications of Ankylosing spondylitis include,

  • In severe and late cases of Ankylosing spondylitis new bone formation occurs. This is an attempt by the body to inflammation and healing process starts by formation of new bone. Formation of new bone in spine lead to bridging of gap between two vertebrae and ultimately fusion of vertebrae. Where fusion of vertebrae takes place that area of spine becomes rigid and inflexible. Bending or attempt to bend may become very painful in such situations. If fusion occurs in the rib cage it may lead to difficulty in breathing, restriction of lung capacity and lung function, due to stiffening of rib cage.
  • Compression fracture may occur in some patients with Ankylosing spondylitis, especially in the early stage of disease. This is due to thinning of bones due to Ankylosing spondylitis. Vertebrae becomes weak and may crumble under pressure, which result in worsening of stooping posture which occurs due to Ankylosing spondylitis. Compression fracture of vertebrae can damage spinal cord and nerves that pass through it as well as tendons and ligaments that are attached to it.
  • Uveitis (inflammation of eyes) may be seen in Ankylosing spondylitis. If this condition develops the eyes become very painful, and there is sensitivity of light and blurring of vision. This is a common complication of Ankylosing spondylitis and if you notice any vision problem or pain in eye, consult your doctor immediately.
  • Cardiovascular problems (complications) may develop in Ankylosing spondylitis. Aorta (the largest artery of body) may develop inflammation which can become enlarged. The enlargement of aorta may be to the extent that the normal shape of aortic valve of the heart may be distorted, which can impair normal functioning of heart.

Never neglect the complications that may occur if you have Ankylosing spondylitis. If you notice any abnormal problem consult your doctor regarding this, as it may be a symptom of complication of Ankylosing spondylitis.
