Helpful Tips in Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid Arthritis or RA is a common health problem among elderly individuals. RA can be debilitating and a crippling disease, especially during flare ups of symptoms. As there is no cure for the disease, it becomes more important to manage the disease, so that it affects your life least and do not hamper your day to day activities. It is important for you (if you are suffering from RA) to learn ways to protect your joints and at the same time there is minimal disturbance in your lifestyle and day to day activities. Here are some tips to remain pain free and lead a normal productive life as far as practicable, in presence of RA.

Stretch your joints and body:

Except during flare up of symptoms, when you are pain free it is very important to stretch your all joints every day to the extent that you can tolerate and to the extent that it does not cause pain. A physiotherapist or your doctor can help you tailor your stretching methods. Patients of arthritis usually feel stiffness of joints in the morning, hence, taking a warm bath before starting stretching exercise is helpful and make it less painful.

Use a cane:

You may be thinking using cane is not helpful and it is a symbol of disability, but studies suggest that using a cane can take off as much as 20% of your body weight off from legs, hips, and ankles. As long as using a cane is helpful for you never mind if it is a symbol of disability.

Hot wax:

If your RA is symptomatic and causing pain in joints, using hot wax can reduce symptoms and make joints less painful. Hot wax helps by reducing inflammation (and RA is a chronic inflammatory disease). Using hot wax is like using warm water as the distribution of heat is even and better than hot pads. Hot wax can be used at home also by yourself, without need of expert/professional help. You can buy hot wax online easily, without any difficulty.

Use tools more frequently:

If you are suffering from RA, it is best to use tools as much as practicable to protect your joints, by making everyday tasks easy. Use knives, can openers, zipper pulls, and many other similar tools to make daily tasks easier. You can buy all sort of such tools online without even visiting your nearby departmental store.

Plan well:

This is very important. Plan well to protect your joints from further damage and make life pain free as far as practicable, so that RA does not affect your life adversely. Even if you are on medication for RA, flare ups may occur any time and it is not possible when flare ups appear. Hence be prepared to face flare ups, for which good planning is essential. Pan all your activities. If you exercise for 30 minutes a day, it need not be at one go, you can do it in 3 installments of 10 minutes each spread over the whole day. If you are fond of gardening, do it in in installments of 10-15 minutes work few times a day.

Do not get discouraged if you have rheumatoid arthritis and face the problem boldly. If you are bold, you have already won half the war.
