What are the advantages of high carb low fat diet?

High carb low fat diet has several health benefits such as:

  • High carb low fat diet can prevent heart diseases and certain types of cancer.
  • Helps in reducing body weight in obese and overweight individuals. Because high carb low fat diet generally made up of fruits and vegetables, which are rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants. They are also low in calories.
  • Reduce hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol in blood), thereby reduce risk of heart disease.

What are the disadvantages of high carb low fat diet?

High carb low fat diet has some disadvantages as well, they are:

  • Deficiency of certain lipid/fat soluble vitamins (such as vitamin A, D, E, and K etc.) may occur, especially if diet is not planned well, because they are most commonly found in fatty foods.
  • If not planned well, calorie intake may be very high and hinder weight loss, especially if diet contain high amount of pasta, bread etc.
  • Some studies have shown that intake of high carb low fat diet for long period may increase risk of pancreatic cancer and breast cancer.

Before deciding on starting to take high carb low fat diet for any purpose, including for weight loss, it is important to weigh pros and cons of high carb low fat diet and decide.
