How Many Meals You Should Eat Daily

ID-100234260This question (how often one should eat) is a common problem faced by most of us. It is not easy to decide how many meal a day is best and healthy. Many go for two major meals and two or more minor meals (i.e. snacks etc.) a day, whereas some like to have three or four meals a day. Some people even eat more frequently.

The right number of meals a day is not easy to conclude. Some experts believe in eating 2-3 meals a day and a few in between snacks, whereas some experts are recently saying that as many as eight times we should eat in a day.

Points in favor of six to eight meals a day:

  • Eating 6-8 meals a day is useful for preventing fat deposit, because you eat small quantity of food with every meal, which are used up for maintaining your metabolism and less calories are available for storing as fat. Eating frequent meals is especially good for diabetic individuals, because it helps to maintain blood sugar level within a normal range and do not allow blood sugar level to shoot up, because you never eat huge quantity of food at one meal.
  • Eating fewer meals a day can help in storing fat, because of eating larger quantity of foot at each meal, the excess food is stored as fat, after utilizing the required energy.
  • When we eat food, it is digested and the digestion process itself require calorie (energy). That means the food one eats, some part is utilized for digestion and absorption of the food. Which reduces the total amount of calorie entering the body.

Points in favor of 3 meals a day:

  • If you eat too frequently, you will end up visiting dentist more often, because dental hygiene will be difficult to maintain with too frequent meals.
  • The amount of energy required to digest food is too small a fraction of actual calorie intake, that it makes little difference, if any.
  • After eating our metabolism boosts, may not be true at all.
  • If we eat too frequently, it becomes too difficult to keep track of what and how much we eat, which ultimately end in eating excess and weight gain.
  • Leptin, a chemical that is secreted in the brain when our stomach is full and signal us to stop eating by signaling to prevent appetite, will not be secreted when we eat too frequently and in small quantity. Which ultimately makes us hungry and we end up eating excess. After a satisfactory meal and release of leptin one does not feel hungry for long time (it is psychological) and as a result we end up eating less, which helps to reduce actual calorie intake.

There are points in favor of eating 3 meals a day as well as for eating 6-8 meals a day. Whatever suits you, you should stick to it. We should remember one thing: it is good to eat on time every day, but it is better to eat when you are hungry and it is still better to feel hungry on time and eat in time.
