Phototoxic & Photo-allergic Drugs

There are many drugs which can cause photoallergy and phototoxicity. The commonly used drugs which can cause phototoxicity and photoallergy are given below:

Some examples of phototoxic drugs are given here:

-5- Fluorouracil



-fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin etc.)


-nalidixic acid





-sulfonylureas (e.g. glimeperide used in treatment of diabetes)


-thiazides (diuretics like hydrochlorothiazide used in treatment of hypertension)

-vinblastine (anti cancer drug).

Some examples of photoallergic drugs are given here:

-6-Methylcoumarin aminobenzoic acid and its esters



-diclofenac sodium or diclofenac potassium (voveran)

-fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin etc.)

-hypericin (St John’s Wort)

-musk ambrette

-piroxicam (painkiller drug used for treatment of pain)


-sulfonamides (antibiotics)

-sulfonylureas (anti diabetic medications) etc.

All these drugs can have negative effects on patients’ health state. Some of the drugs (medicines) are listed under both phototoxic and photoallergic drugs and have both the harmful effects (side effects).
