Tips To Avoid Pet, Mold and Food Allergens

Pets, mold spores and various foods are common cause of allergy and symptoms of allergy. It is therefore important to avoid these to prevent allergy symptoms. It is possible to reduce risk of exposures to food allergy, mold spores, although may not be completely possible to avoid them.

Tips to avoid mold:

Molds grow anywhere that is decaying, inside house as well as outside. Molds are common especially in warm and humid environment. Molds, when exposed to humidity produce spores (which may have polysaccharides covering), which are the cause of allergy and not the mold itself. Hence, it is important to keep your home dry and clean.

  • Keep your house dry and well ventilated to keep moisture away.
  • If there is any damp and wet place in your home, make sure to dry it and clean it regularly.
  • Do not dry cloths indoor or near the fireplace.
  • Do not forget to keep the internal door closed while taking a shower. Open internal door of your bathroom can spread moisture to other rooms of your house and increase humidity, which is ideal for spore formation of molds.
  • Do not use humidifier, unless extremely essential for some medical reason.

Tips to avoid food allergens:

  1. Read the label while purchasing a food item from your grocery store. Avoid the product if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. Common allergic foods include eggs, milk, nuts, fish, shrimp, and some preservatives used for foods.
  2. Avoid places of eating where different types of foods may come in contact with each other such as bakeries, buffets etc.
  3. Always remember sauce and other ingredients used for preparing food may contain allergen.
  4. One simple rule to avoid allergic foods is to eat simple foods, because simple foods are less likely to have any allergen.
  5. Lean to identify which food item you are allergic to and avoid it.

Tips to avoid pets:

Contrary to popular belief it is not the fur of pets that cause allergy, but flakes of dead skin cells, saliva, urine etc. cause allergy. The best way avoid pet allergy is to get rid of the pet itself. However, if you can not get rid of your pet permanently, you can follow the steps given below to reduce risk of allergy:

  • Do not allow pets to your bedroom.
  • Restrict entry of pet to inside your home. Or restrict pet to one room of your house.
  • Groom your pet regularly.
  • Wash your pet/dog thoroughly and regularly, at least once a week.
  • If you visit your friend with pet, make sure they do not dust the house on the day of your visit.
  • Keep anti-allergic medication (antihistamines) ready with you.
