Top Five Summer Health Risks

Summer is good for people who love outdoor activities and enjoy nature and weather. However, summer can bring certain health risks not usually seen during winter or other seasons. It is therefore important to know various health risks that may occur during summer and take preventive measures. Take proper precautions during summer and remain safe and enjoy at the same time.

Dehydration:

Dehydration is a common problem during summer, if you are not careful about it. Dehydration is common during summer because of excess loss of water and electrolytes due to excess sweating. To prevent dehydration keep yourself adequately hydrated by drinking water at regular interval. Drink one glass of water every hour if you are engaged in physical activity. You can also drink fruit juice, or any other beverage regularly to keep hydrated. If dehydration sets in, drink ORS (oral rehydration salt/solution), which is available at every medical store.

Heat stroke:

It is a serious medical emergency and a life threatening condition, if timely medical attention is not available. The core body temperature rises much above normal, which may cause permanent damage to various organs of the body. Signs and symptoms of heat stroke include confusion, rapid and short breathing, rapid pulse, absence of sweating etc. If anyone suffers from heat stroke, take the person in a cook place and call emergency medical service.

Food poisoning:

Food poisoning is common health hazard during summer. Because, there are picnics, outdoor parties, which leads to outside exposure of food and food remain in hot environment for very long time before it is consumed. Apply basic food safety precautions and prevent food poisoning during summer picnics and other outdoor activities.

Drowning:

Drowning is a common health problem during summer, because most people go for swimming in lakes, rivers and swimming pools. Drowning can also occur after boat accident. Take adequate safety measures, such as using life-jacket during boating. Children should be under adult supervision when they go for swimming or when they are near water.

Skin cancer:

One of the most common form of cancer is skin cancer, which most commonly occur during summer. Millions of people are diagnosed with skin cancer every year. Excess exposure to direct sunlight without protection is the cause of skin cancer. Whites are at greater risk of skin cancer. Skin cancer is rare among blacks, because melanin present in their skin (which makes skin dark) filter the harmful effect of sunlight and protect blacks from skin cancer. Exposure to sun and sunburn is the most common cause of skin cancer. Use protective clothing and UV protective lotion to prevent skin cancer if you get exposed to sun.
