Use Albendazole Properly and Safely

Albendazole is available in various brand names such as Zentel, Albeza etc. Albendazole is used for various diseases caused by worms (intestinal worms as well as extra intestinal worms), such as neurocysticercosis, cystic hydatid disease of liver, lung, peritoneum and also many other diseases caused by worms roundworms (ascariasis), hookworms (ancylostomiasis and necatoriasis), pinworms (enterobiasis or oxyuriasis), tapeworms (taeniasis), whipworms (trichuriasis), trichostrongyliasis, strongyloidiasis, cutaneous larva migrans etc.

Proper use of albendazole:

This medication should be used exactly as your doctor advises. Do not use it for longer than advised, higher dose than prescribed and more often than advised by your doctor. The dose, way of use and duration of use may vary according to the disease under treated, e.g. if it is used for treating neurocysticercosis it is usually used for 4 weeks and if it is used for intestinal worm infestation (such as roundworms or ascariasis, hookworms, pinworms etc.) a single dose may be sufficient.

If albendazole is used for intestinal worm infestation it is ideally taken with water after crushing or chewed and swallowed, preferably on empty stomach to reduce absorption, because the drug should remain in intestine and not absorbed for it to act inside intestinal lumen. When the drug is used for extra intestinal disease such as neurocysticercosis, cystic hydatid disease of liver, lung, and peritoneum it should be taken along with fatty meal to increase absorption for better effectiveness.

Unlike some other drugs used for worm infestation of intestine, albendazole does not need any special preparations such as laxatives, or enemas, before during or immediately after taking the drug. However, for best result take the drug as your doctor advises you.

Dosage of albendazole:

  • For neurocysticercosis person weighing 60 kilo or more the dose is 400 mgs tablets two times a day along with meal (preferably fatty meal, because fats increase absorption of albendazole) for 10 to 30 days, usually for 28 days. For persons and children weighing less than 60 kilo the dose is 15 mgs per kilo per day in two divided doses for same duration as adults.
  • For hydatid disease of liver, lung, and peritoneum: the dose of albendazole for this for adults more than 60 kilo is 400 mgs tablets two times a day with meal for 28 days, this is one cycle that is followed by 14 days without drug and this is repeated for 3 cycles for complete treatment. For children and adults less than 60 kilo the dose is 15 mgs per kilo per day in two divided doses for 3 cycles of 28 days each and in between cycles 14 days gap without drug.
