What Are The Risks In Cosmetic Surgery?

Every surgical procedure, including cosmetic surgery carry some risk and have side effects associated with it. If you are a smoker, you at greater risk of having side effects and/or complications due to cosmetic surgery. Healing is also delayed if you are a smoker and delayed healing may increase risks. You are also at greater risk if you suffer from cardiovascular problems (such as hypertension, high blood cholesterol, blood cloting problem etc.), diabetes, obesity (BMI or body mass index of 30 or more is obesity), and lung disease (pneumonia) etc.

Complications that may occur due to cosmetic surgery include,

  • Infection of the site of incision and scar formation afterward. To remove the scar, another cosmetic surgery may have to be done with similar risks.
  • Complications of anesthetic use. In extremely rare occasions even death may occur as complication of cosmetic surgery procedure.
  • There may be nerve damage and sometimes the nerve damage may be permanent. Nerve damage may cause numbness and tingling of area supplied by the particular damaged nerve.
  • Bleeding may occur. In rare occasion, bleeding may be large enough to require blood transfusion.
  • Scar formation is another side effect. Sometimes scar formation may occur while removing a scar using cosmetic surgery.
  • Swelling of operated site due to fluid buildup in the area. This is usually temporary and it slowly goes away on its own with time. However, fluid buildup may hamper healing process and delay healing.

Cosmetic surgery is used for various reasons by various individuals. Each individual has different purpose and expectations from cosmetic surgery procedure. In most cases cosmetic surgery is done for cosmetic reason and less for medical reason. It is important to understand that the same procedure may give different result in different individuals, even if done by the same surgeon.

  • Recovery from surgery may vary from person to person and the procedure used and it may range from 6 weeks to 12 weeks in typical cosmetic surgery procedures. Recovery after the same procedure may also vary from person to person.
  • Follow up surgeries may be required in some cases.

It is important to be realistic about the expectation from cosmetic surgery and expectation of perfection should not be there. Every individual is different, hence result of same procedure may be different even if the procedure is done by same surgeon.
