Why You Need to Watch Your Waist Size Carefully?

There are various health indicators as well as indicators of longevity and healthy life, such as BMI (body mass index), smoking history, alcohol abuse, physical activity, age etc. as well as waist circumference. Waist circumference is important health indicator (indicator of longevity of life) independent of the above-mentioned factors. Hence, we all need to watch waist circumference and keep a check on it.

Where to measure waist circumference?

Do you know how and where to measure waist circumference? It is not the size of your pants or where you wear your belt. To find out waist circumference, take out your measuring tape, find your hipbones on either side of abdomen and mark the topmost parts of your hipbones. Wrap the measuring tape around your body at the level of topmost parts of your two hipbones. Do not press the tape, it should just snug to your bare skin. The measuring tape should be parallel to the floor. Now just relax and exhale and read the measurement. This is your waist circumference. This can be easily done at home without help of an expert or a health care professional.

So, you have already measured your waist circumference. Now what?

The waist circumference is an important indicator of your overall health and longevity. This measurement say a lot about your overall health and longevity, as shown by recent large study, involving 650,000 adults. The study showed that men with a waist circumference of 43 inches or 110 centimeters were more than 50% greater risk of death compare to men with a 37 inch (95 centimeter) waist. Similar result for women too, women with 37 inch (95 centimeter) waist is at 80% greater risk of death than women with a 27.5 inch (70 centimeter) waist circumference.

A large waist circumference means, excess abdominal fat, obesity, high risk of diabetes, high level of cholesterol and triglycerides, high blood pressure, which are indicative of metabolic syndrome. These factors also increase risk of coronary artery disease, a leading cause of mortality and morbidity throughout the world.

If you are a man and your waist circumference is 43 inches (110 centimeters) or more or if you are a woman and your waist circumference is 37 inches (95 centimeters) or more, you better watch out your waist circumference and try to bring it down. It is not an easy task, at the same time it is not very tough either. Be active physically, eat right portions at right time, and think positive to help bring down your waist circumference. Along with bringing down waist circumference, you also bring down health risk, risk of premature death and improve your overall health and longevity.
